Student Executive Officers

We created this role because we believe the most powerful force for change in any high school isn't a program or an event — it's a student who is sold out, lit up, and deeply convinced that the people around them matter to God — and want to do something about it.

The call of servant leadership

The Upward Call
Therefore, be imitators of God, as beloved children. And walk in love, as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us, a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God.
— Ephesians 5:1-2

When we were in high school, some of the most significant spiritual growth in our lives came as a result of stepping into a leadership role. There, we were surrounded by great mentors who invested in us and called us higher. It also meant that we had a pivotal opportunity to take our relationship with Jesus more seriously than ever because there was a school full of watching students wondering if we were the real deal. Students around us wanted to know if we were really authentic, forgiving, compassionate, confident, and full of joy because we were followers of Jesus. In many ways, our reputation influenced the reputation of the ministry we represented on campus — and also influenced how other students viewed Jesus and if He was worth following, asking themselves, “Could Jesus really be that amazing?”

Imagine what your school could look like if the kingdom of God began showing up in the hallways, at the lunch tables, and on your teams — and in the coffee shops all over your community as students are learning to know and follow Jesus with their mentors. That's exactly what He wants to do. That is Ascent’s vision. Jesus came to seek and save the lost. He came to bind up the wounds of the brokenhearted. He came to restore our lives and give us a new identity and purpose. And that is what this position is all about.

This role isn't about a title or something for a college application — though it's definitely that too! At its core, this is for the Ascent Student who feels something stirring when they think about their friends who don't know Jesus yet. The one who looks around their school and prays, "Father, open their eyes to your love." This position is for the student who wants to use their time and talents to help build something that will bear fruit for years to come.

If that sounds like you, keep reading!

What am I signing up for?

Commitment

Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others. Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus, who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, but emptied himself, by taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men. And being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross.
— Philippians 2:4-8

We're not going to pile you with tasks and to-do lists. Being a Student Exec is more about your heart, your presence, and your desire to see God use you and Ascent to transform lives with the love of Jesus.

As a Student Exec, there are two commitments we'll ask you to make:

1. Show up to every Ascent event. Not most of them — all of them. Your consistent presence demonstrates your consistent desire for God to move in and through Ascent. When other students see you there, it tells them that this matters and it's worth your time. You're not just attending — you're creating culture and building momentum just by being there.

2. Join us for the monthly Student Exec meetup with chapter leadership. It's where Chapter Leaders will pour into you, celebrate what God’s doing in the chapter, pray together, and strategically prepare for what's coming up next.

That's it. Two commitments. Everything else — all of the friendships, the fun, and the fruit — grows naturally from those two things.

Each chapter has the freedom to determine any number of events it would like to host — For example, in Dallas, the Park Cities Chapter has 5th Quarters after home football games. The West Palm Chapter throws an annual Galentine’s Party and some Worship Nights. The Memorial Chapter may have Donuts & Devos on a Saturday morning. Whatever the Executive Officers and Chapter Leaders choose to do sets the calendar for the year ahead and determines what events you are committing to.

We definitely understand having to miss for things like school, sports, and family events. This isn’t meant to be a rigid commitment, but something that you do your best to honor.

The kind of person we're looking for

Character

I thank my God in all my remembrance of you, always in every prayer of mine for you all making my prayer with joy, because of your partnership in the gospel from the first day until now. And I am sure of this, that he who began a good work in you will bring it to completion at the day of Jesus Christ.
— Philippians 1:3-6

You don't have to be the loudest person in the room or the most popular kid in school. We’re looking for students who are faithful in the little and excited to reach their peers (and who really love Ascent!).

Do some of these describe you?

  • You genuinely love people and carry a burden for the students around you to know Jesus and experience His love

  • You have real conviction — you know what you believe and why it matters

  • You’ve consistently prioritized connecting with your Mentor and see the value of that time

  • You're dependable — when you say you'll be somewhere, you're there

  • You’re not looking for another activity to add to your crowded schedule — you’re looking for another way to make heaven crowded with the people around you

  • You’re fun (or at least try to be!), don’t take yourself too seriously, and love being on a collaborative team

  • You're humble enough to follow leadership and fired up enough to take initiative

  • You see how your leadership helps Ascent reach more students now — and have a greater impact in the years to come

A few honest questions

Count the Cost
The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want. He makes me lie down in green pastures. He leads me beside still waters. He restores my soul. He leads me in paths of righteousness for his name’s sake.
— Psalm 23:1-3

We want this to be a yes you're fully at peace with and prepared to follow through on. So sit with these for a bit. Consider all of the other commitments you’ll have. Talk to your parents and make sure they understand the commitment as well. Pray about it.

  • Can I genuinely commit to Ascent this year — leadership, mentorship, and attendance at Ascent events? Am I willing to say no to other invitations to fulfill my commitments?

  • Am I doing this because I feel called and compelled to lead — or because it sounds cool and I want to add one more thing to my resume?

  • Most importantly, do I want to see Jesus reach and transform my school? Do I get excited when I think about anyone in my school or church experiencing the love of Jesus through me or a mentor?

If you're sitting there nodding your head — we would love for you to apply. You're exactly who we're hoping will step into this. Our prayer is that He would lead you in a path of righteousness for His name’s sake.

If you have any questions, please get in touch with your chapter leader.
